Named as a symbol of generosity
after Baron Moritz de Hirsch, Reform congregation De Hirsch Sinai was incorporated
in 1899. The synagogue seen here was designed by Julian Everett. Dedicated
in 1908, the synagogue was recognized as a Seattle landmark in 1981. After
long debate, the congregation decided to rebuild rather than attend to structural
repairs in the early 1990s. Today, the stairway and columns stand as an entryway
to a large garden. Owned by the synagogue, the space is mainly used for weddings,
celebrating Sukkoth, and other special events.
